EFM (Ethernet in the First Mile) brings the throughout use of the Ethernet protocol from the core network to the subscriber. EFM eliminates the non-Ethernet transport via DSL, which commonly uses the ATM protocol - just like the SDH backbone.
Switching the backbone to IP left the First Mile between central office LT and subscriber NT as the only member in the data transport chain which uses a different data transmission technology. For the network operators the use of Ethernet as standard means saving costs for provisioning, configuration and operation of the network.
